Refining the Thesis: From 21 to 25

When I first wrote my honors undergraduate thesis at 21, I argued that shifting structural parameters altered the social memory of William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice. Looking back on this work at 25, I realize the true target of the investigation: as a society, we have become uncomfortable being uncomfortable. This has made us avoid historical friction.

My research track focused on how textual translation, strategic omission in film, and institutional silence act as armor against discomfort. When problematic historic art is smoothed over rather than confronted, it breaks down our collective critical capacity and media comprehension skills. This structural amnesia creates direct loopholes in modern pop culture, leaving us unable to address systemic harms today.

The Structural Mechanics of Forgetting

Phase 1: Inception & Containment

Challenging Early Anxieties

Early texts like Chaucer’s The Prioress's Tale and Marlowe’s The Jew of Malta relied on unnuanced tropes to manage structural fears. Shakespeare introduced a messy, deeply human counter-architecture in Shylock. This structural shift forced audiences to confront the hypocrisy of their own dominant social frameworks.

Phase 2: Translation Alignment

Totalitarian Sanitization

Under the Third Reich, the state stripped out the play's humanizing complexities to align the narrative with raw propaganda. By modifying canonical German translations, the regime removed sections that humanized marginalized figures. This modification protected audiences from sitting with any complex moral tension. The state was thinking for the people.

Phase 3: Cinematic Omission

The Morally Evasive Cut

Michael Radford’s 2004 film adaptation displays external visual details of intolerance while systematically trimming away Shakespeare's most challenging language. This textual smoothing provides a comfortable viewing experience but flattens the script's essential structural critiques. It takes away one of the most important parts of film: media literacy.

The Critical Paradox

Why It Matters:
From Shylock to Kanye West.

When we chop out problematic passages or delete historical context from classic literature, we aren't solving prejudice; we are disabling our muscle memory to recognize it. If our default settings are tuned to smooth away rough edges for personal comfort, we stop evaluating how our ancestors got to the uncomfortable parts of history.

You can see this exact systemic loophole flattening today's media culture. Public discourse gets jammed into weird buckets. Things are either labeled too "woke" or "not woke enough." Nuance dies out, and people become incredibly easy to manipulate because they can't track subtext. History rhymes so perfectly that if Jonathan Swift published A Modest Proposal on the internet tomorrow, it would be taken entirely literally because our baseline understanding of satire is practically gone.

This massive wave of historical amnesia explains exactly why figures like Kanye West can go on television, sprout overt Nazi rhetoric, face a brief corporate time-out, and then slide straight back into cultural prominence. Because we have conditioned audiences to look away from structural harms (or, worse, accept it's just a joke without the punchline) and fast-forward to a clean edit, the toxic cycle resets itself without any real confrontation.
