Prologue
First, I learned to
tell a story.
B.A. in Creative Writing, B.A. in English
At age four, when my dad's boss asked what I wanted to be, I answered with absolute conviction: “Barbie." While my current wardrobe doesn't match the aesthetic, nor do I have plastic limbs, but trust me, child Derby would probably approve of what I've done since then.
Facing a steep learning curve in Strategic Marketing at a highly respected firm, one question stood out: "What is your background in politics?" My honest reply was, "Nothing yet. But I promise I will learn." I made sure to be the first person in the office every day. There, I gained experience across National Non-Profits, Major Pharma companies, and Fortune 500 offices—intense, fascinating, and relentlessly fast-paced.
Eventually, I swapped the D.C. pace for for the academic rhythm of Higher Education. (Spoiler alert: whoever called Higher Ed 'slow-paced' was wrong.) Within months, I took full ownership of the university's CRM platform despite having no formal background. After proving my willingness to learn there, I moved from just being a copywriter to inheriting their entire CRM system without any formal training. Learning happened entirely on the fly—entirely go, go, go.
Now, almost a year since that promotion, I have revamped our email HTML code, caused an event to close early from it hitting our registration gap, allowed us to grow our different communication flows.
